/ challenge

The Faculty of Actuaries and the Institute of Actuaries are the two chartered professional bodies for UK actuaries, working closely together across the UK as The Actuarial Profession. The Councils of the Faculty and the Institute are considering putting a proposal to merge the Faculty and the Institute to their memberships.

Living PR was asked to undertake a consultancy project to engage with members and canvass their views on the actuarial profession and its future goals, as well as their opinions on the proposed merger.

/ solution

Living PR conducted a series of focus groups, one-to-one interviews, and launched an online discussion forum and survey across the 20,000 strong membership. The key driver to our approach was to get closer to the members of both professional bodies.

/ result

We gained an invaluable insight into the impact the potential merger could have and how the new merged body could be shaped in the future. The online survey was particularly successful in achieving its objective as it was completed by 27% of members.

From our research it was clear that there is a strong sense of community and members are keen to play a part in shaping the future of the profession. The majority of members interviewed support the proposed merger and see the future of the actuarial profession as a united body.

UPDATE: Voting members of the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland (82.9%) and Institute of Actuaries (82.5%) voted in favour of the merger resolutions to form the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries on 25 May 2010.
