The hedge fund landscape after the storm

31 July 2012

Two days after a Typhoon signal #10 hit Hong Kong for the first time in 13 years, the Living HK team headed out to the Bloomberg office for the “Evolving Trends in the Hedge Fund Landscape” seminar, where our client Alex Last from leading offshore law firm Mourant Ozannes, was one of the guest speakers.

The first thing that greeted us was the legendary Bloomberg pantry with its rows of chips, chocolates, fruit and drinks.  The selection was very impressive; one would almost expect a cash register somewhere in the corner!

Snacking aside, Bloomberg experts kicked off the seminar with a presentation of their trading and asset management platforms, after which the guest speakers took to the stage.

Mourant Ozannes’ presentation touched on the what, how and why of funds corporate governance, highlighting the central role of the Board of Directors in the regulation of fund vehicles. Alex, a partner with the offshore law firms’ HK office, cited the landmark case of the collapsed Weavering Macro Income Fund as a “poster child” for the importance of good corporate governance.

On the whole, an interesting and informative afternoon, capped off with networking cocktails.
